Playwright's Biography

Carol S. Lashof is a playwright, librettist, and teacher. Her plays have been produced by the Magic Theatre of San Francisco, Bay Area Radio Drama, Palo Alto TheatreWorks, the Short Plays Ensemble of San Francisco, Fringe Benefits Theatre Company in Los Angeles, and Young People’s Theater of Ann Arbor, as well as at schools, colleges, and community theatres around the world from Barstow, California to Beijing, China.

Publications include “Medusa's Tale” in Plays in One Act (Ecco Press, 1991) and two short plays for elementary school audiences—“Matzah” and “What Color Is Your Mama?”—which appear in Cootie Shots: Theatrical Inoculations Against Bigotry (Theatre Communications Group, 2001). “Medusa’s Tale” has been translated into Chinese and anthologized in the first collection of contemporary American plays to be published in China (Foreign Language Press, 2005). Two monologues from "Gap" appear in One on One: The Best Men’s Monologues for the Twenty-First Century (2008); and scenes from "Gap" and "Persephone Underground" appear in Duo! Best Scenes for Two for the Twenty-First Century (2009); both anthologies are published by Applause Books.

Recent work includes:

"Threat Level" (with James McCarthy): a fifteen-minute opera about national security commissioned by the Scottish National Opera.
