Actor/Director/Playwright DAVID ANTHONY WRIGHT began his theatrical career in 1989 “on a bet.” While living in Asheville, NC, a friend challenged him to audition for a reader’s theatre production of George Orwell’s "Animal Farm" at the Asheville Community Theatre. In a stupefyingly appropriate bit of casting, David portrayed the role of “Benjamin the Donkey.” From that auspicious beginning, he has gone on to a full-time career in theatre as an actor, a director, an administrator and playwright.
David’s on-stage work includes roles in over fifty professional and community theatre productions. Among his favorites, he counts Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof", Whiteside in "The Man Who Came To Dinner", Sidney in "Deathtrap", George in "Moon Over Buffalo" and Saunders in "Lend Me A Tenor". Most recently, David has portrayed the title character in "Rejoice Dear Hearts: An Evening with Brother Dave Gardner", a show he wrote and is touring nationally under the auspices of The JENA Company of New York. David has directed forty productions for a variety of professional and community theatre groups. In addition, he has founded three theatrical groups. Presently, he is Managing Director of The Paramount Theater of Burlington, NC and Artistic Director of The Paramount Acting Company. “Playwright” was added to his resume in 2001 when he wrote the “book” for the musical, "Cole’s Dairy Lunch", which has seen two major productions since then. In 2004, the aforementioned "Rejoice Dear Hearts…" premiered. The summer of 2007 saw David’s work as librettist on the musical "The Fabulous Paramounts", a show that enjoyed a sold-out run at The Paramount. His most recent work, "Ruthie", is a drama inspired by the Old Testament Book of Ruth. It was named winner of the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre’s “Scriptworks 2007” competition, and will receive its professional premiere during SART's 2008 season. David resides in Burlington, NC with his “nearly-perfect wife,” Susan, his Australian Silky Terrier, Bridget, and his Yorkshire Terrier, Gabrielle. Contact Me |
